A Beginners’ Guide – Plant Variety Rights

A plant variety right (PVR) is a registered right which protects a novel plant variety.

As the owner of a registered PVR, you have the exclusive right to produce, sell or licence seed and reproductive material of that variety.

A PVR may be appropriate if you have developed any kind of plant (other than algae and bacteria). A PVR will be granted if the new variety (or cultivar/cultivated variety) is new, distinct, uniform and stable and an acceptable denomination (variety name) is proposed.
