Barbara Sullivan is a Principal of Henry Hughes and a Partner in Henry Hughes & Co. Barbara has more than 25 years extensive experience advising global and national clients. She provides strategic Intellectual Property advice, mainly in the areas of trade marks and copyright, Fair Trading Act, passing off and licensing.
Barbara has been listed as one of New Zealand's leading trade mark practitioners in the independent publication, The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers, for the years 2003 - 2010. Barbara was also named a leading practitioner in Expert Guides' Guide to the World's Leading Women in Business Law, in 2010. Barbara works collaboratively with a global network of intellectual property practitioners on the acquisition, protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights for multinational companies. She represents clients before the Commissioner of Trade Marks, and before the High Court and Court of Appeal. Examples of major litigation in which Barbara has acted are the Levi Strauss & Co v Kimbyr Investments, and the Anheuser-Bush Inc v Budweiser Budvar, National Corporation cases.
Barbara has practiced as a Solicitor in Australia, and as a trade mark attorney in the United Kingdom. She is registered as a Patent Attorney in Australia and is a Member of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (UK).
Her professional memberships include: the New Zealand Law Society, Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Patent Attorneys (NZIPA), Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia (IPTA), Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (ITMA), Intellectual Property Society of Australia & New Zealand (IPSANZ), Licensing Executives Association (LES), the International Trademark Association (INTA) and International Association of Intellectual Property Practitioners (AIPPI). Barbara is a member of the INTA Panel of Neutrals and of the INTA Bulletin Committee.
Articles by Barbara have been published in Intellectual Property journals in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Barbara has presented papers at international trade mark conferences and intellectual property conferences, and to New Zealand industry groups and tertiary students.
Barbara is particularly interested in the protection of artistic works. She also has an interest in indigenous people's cultural properties.
