The Madrid System – 100 and counting

In a step signalling the continuing commitment of ASEAN member states (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) to join the Madrid system, Indonesia became the 100th member of the Madrid Union.

The inclusion of Indonesia marks the inclusion of the largest domestic market of the ten ASEAN member states (approx. 41%)[1].

As of 2 January 2018 the Madrid Protocol will enter into force for Indonesia. This means that trade mark owners will be able to designate Indonesia in their new international application, or owners of existing international registrations can apply to subsequently designate Thailand to add it to the existing registration.

Of the ten ASEAN member states, only Malaysia and Myanmar remain to join the Madrid system.
